“Why is the study of history important?” is the question posed in a new essay writing competition launched in the October issue of BBC History Magazine. Directed at Higher Still pupils aged between 14-18 years old, the prize is pound;1,000 and a Hewlett Packard multimedia PC for the winner’s school.

Magazine editor Greg Neale says: “It will encourage students to develop their writing skills and to construct substantial analytical arguments - both vital for success in history examinations.”

The essays should notexceed 2,000 words and will be judged by a panel comprising an examiner, a BBC History Magazine adviser and Mr Neale.

As well as the main prize there is a runner-up prize of pound;500 and Hewlett Packard school equipment, plus a separate prize of pound;250 and Hewlett Packard school equipment for the Standard grade student who submits the best essay on the same subject.
