It has been my misfortune to attend two colleges recently for interviews, in both instances, travelling a considerable distance to do so. I have no complaints about the manner in which the candidates were received at the college, the introduction and tour of the premises, nor the conduct of the presentation and interview process itself.
My major complaint is the manner in which unsuccessful candidates were advised of the outcome.
On both occasions, I had to contact the colleges in order to find out who had got the job. Both times, I was initially told a time when candidates would be advised of the result. It was at least a week after this date that I contacted the colleges to find that I had been unsuccessful - not that I was surprised by this, but I did feel badly let down by the cavalier manner in which the colleges treated me. It appears to be unprofessional conduct on the part of the colleges if they cannot follow up effectively on unsuccessful interview candidates, if only to show a caring and employee-centred focus.
After all, they are all eager to show that they are "investors in people", and show the award to prove it.
However, the age-old maxim still says it all: "The proof of the pudding is in the eating", and in these instances at least, it left a very sour taste in the mouth.
