The old East Germany was a dictatorship. It was dangerous even to speak badly of the government, let alone vote against it. You could end up being tortured, or put in prison, or both. And yet it was called the German Democratic Republic.

The word "democracy" is much abused. The concept of democracy is sometimes quite subtle. And yet, if children are to understand theassumptions behind education for citizenship, then they need some understanding of what democracy in a country means. This project aims to give them the beginnings of such an understanding.
