James Bond is back - and he’s gunning for pupils’ pocket money.

SilverFin, the first in a series of five novels featuring superspy Bond as a teenager and covering his schooldays at Eton in the 1930s, was published earlier this week.

Author Charlie Higson, of TV’s The Fast Show and Randall and Hopkirk, hopes his Young Bond books, published by Puffin and aimed at eight to 12-year-olds, will encourage boys to read.

“Boys like thrillers. There are lots of books about relationships and magic, wizard books, but not much in the way of straight thrillers,” he said.

But will there be any signs of the playboy adult Bond in the boy?

“I think he will be playing quite a lot of card games,” said Mr Higson, who has also written thrillers for adults.
