I AM relatively new to management and wonder if you have any tips on keeping meetings short and to the point. All the meetings that I attend veer out of control and go on far too long. If nothing else I should like my management to be remembered for short meetings.

You might look towards the retail market. The Gap runs OMMs or one-minute meetings, although I am reliably informed that they usually take a little longer. The OMM is used to update employees on daily developments. The college intranet can be useful. Leave memos for employees and give them time to read them. This will reduce your list when you have a meeting. Spot those who like to digress and harness their wavering tendencies. Set a time frame and keep to it. New issues can be recorded and raised at the next meeting.
