Keeping the faith

WHEN Anne Marie Kelly went for the headship of Our Lady of Lourdes school in Witney, Oxfordshire, in 2001, four other local Roman Catholic primaries were looking for heads. At least one had to re-advertise. The last vacancy was filled this week when Darrel Wood took up his first headship at St Joseph's primary in Carterton. The school had been run by two acting heads for a year.

Mrs Kelly said the Church's commitment to appointing heads "of the faith" could make it harder to find candidates, but said RC teachers faced the same pressures as colleagues of other or no faith.

"I had a letter just before Christmas saying the Office for Standards in Education was coming. It is a big responsibility and some people do not want it," she said.
