YOUR report on Kent’s recent inspection (“Headteachers hostile to Kent authority”, TES, August 4) was unbalanced.

The chief inspector’s comment on the report began : “Kent LEA is progressing and improving ...” Hardly the tone of your piece.

Of course, we are concerned about the criticisms of the minority of heads referred to in the report. Inspectors comment that: “Some are far, some not, some are based on an experience of the LEA that is now out of date; some spring from a desire for greater autonomy; some from a settled conviction ... that there is no role for the LEA.”

Your comments were superficial and did not reflect the very helpful analysis in the report.
