Knock-on in the nursery

Education authorities believe nursery nurses, who receive a two-year training to Higher National Certificate level, are the obvious source for classroom assistants, not least because they are already used to working alongside teachers.

But with just over 2,300 nursery nurses in Scotland (based on full-time equivalent numbers) officials do not believe there are enough of them to supply assistants and warn that recruitment could lead to a shortage of trained staff in nurseries.
