If every 11-year-old could read a map with assurance, we might be able to talk more convincingly about how schools are moving confidently towards well-defined goals. Ordnance Survey is ready to provide a free map for every Year 7 pupil in the country. The registration period is worth noting now - August 11 to October 10. Children will then be able to exercise their skills in estimating distance, interpreting scales, understanding symbols, using reference points and appreciating the nature of an uphill slope. For information on the timetable and registration for the Ordnance Survey scheme, visit: www.freemaps4schools.co.uk.
