Carol Fitz-Gibbon, remarkably youthful 65-year-old professor of education at Durham Yoonie, recalled her teaching days in a California school when she addressed north-east secondary heads.

The usual suspects were forever forgetting pens and pencils and as ever were never very proficient at returning borrowed items.

Fitz-Gibbon introduced a tough new policy. A pen or pencil for a shoe. “At the end of the lesson they do not go out with only one shoe.”
