Lack of selection praised

Non-selective comprehensive education has raised aspirations and levels of achievement, according to analysis of the responses to the Parliament's inquiry into the purposes of education.

There is no support for specialist schools, although people want more curricular choice within the common framework. They also reject any notion of training pupils for specific jobs and back broad views of education for life.

Despite supporting the current system, people believe there is an over-emphasis on "an academic, subject-centred curriculum" and its association with memorising facts, constant tests and target-setting. They want more attention to "various higher order capacities such as thinking skills and citizenship skills", a report to the Parliament's education, culture and sport committee says.

Significantly, submissions endorse comprehensive schools as the best way to promote effective learning for life. They reject any thoughts of more selective, specialist and faith schools.
