ROYAL assent has been given to the Bill which creates city academies, the new “Connexions” careers advice service for teenagers and brings further education within the remit of chief inspector of schools, Chris Woodhead.

The Learning and Skills Act became law as MPs broke up for the ummer. Mainly concerned with FE, it creates the Learning and Skills Council to oversee post 16 training and education outside schools and universities. It also gives local authorities the power to set up FE services for the first time since colleges became independent in 1992.
