Recipients of Section 11 funding and interested organisations have until next Friday to submit responses to the Government’s review of the ethnic-minority teaching scheme.
The study aims to determine the best way of providing additional funding to help ethnic-minority children to overcome language and cultural barriers.
Last November the Government announced that Section 11‘s Pounds 83 million budget would be protected until March 1999.
Bob Wright, a Home Office official conducting the review, said the timetable was tight because ministers wanted the conclusions delivered by early summer, so that arrangements could be put in place before next March.
Respondents have been asked whether the separate role of Section 11 staff has been effective, and if they would prefer the Department for Education and Employment to control the funding.
The National Union of Teachers last year called for such a switch. Education accounts for 97 per cent of Section 11 funding.
Mr Wright said that the review would also draw on views expressed at eight consultation meetings to be held around the country this month.
