THE Government is under pressure from its backbenchers to introduce foreign language teaching in all primaries. Labour’s Denis MacShane complained during education questions in the Commons that language teaching started far too late. Education minister Malcolm Wicks said the Goverment was backing the European Year of Languages in schools and that one in five primary schools was teaching languages. Education Secretary David Blunkett is to respond to the recommendations of an independent inquiry on the future of language learning later this month.
