More than 80 per cent of secondary schools are flouting the law by not holding a daily act of collective worship, a new report is expected to show, writes Jon Salmon.
The evidence is contained in an annual analysis of the work of Standing Advisory Councils on Religious Education throughout England and Wales. Compiled by the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority, it will provide new impetus for those anxious to see the law on schools’ worship changed.
The overview, now being sent out to SACREs, is expected to show that four out of five secondary schools are regularly failing to comply with the legal requirement for daily collective worship “of a broadly Christian character”.
The figure will be interpreted as evidence of a significant growth in non-compliance since 1994.
