Leading a subject

Newly-qualified primary teachers are often expected to take a lead in a school subject area and to have specialist knowledge and expertise in particular subjects which must be disseminated to the rest of the staff, a fact recognised in initial teacher training courses in England and Wales.

Developing a Leadership Role within the Key Stage 1 Curriculum, edited by Julie Davies, lecturer in primary education at Manchester Metropolitan University, School of Education and published by The Falmer Press, is a handbook for students and newly qualified teachers containing the latest curriculum and assessment changes at key stage one.

Two chapters explain how to be an effective co-ordinator and others examine each national curriculum subject, all written by someone who has been or still is a co-ordinator.
