The Learning Set covers five areas: using learning intentions and success criteria with pupils; using questions and discussions in class; giving oral feedback to pupils; providing written feedback, and encouraging self-assessment by pupils.

The company says it has now delivered 294 courses to a third of Scotland’s teachers in two-thirds of its local authorities. It adopted a novel approach to training large numbers of teachers, it says, through a combination of high-quality materials supported by appropriate training opportunities that can be tailored to suit individual circumstances.

Linda Kirkwood, headteacher of Oban High and TES Scotland columnist, says she has used the packs extensively with her staff and found them straightforward and flexible. “But most important of all, they facilitate change,” she says. “I could witness changes in classroom practice the day after our first workshop.”
