Leave the teaching of religion to parents

If children need a “grounding in the beliefs of their families and backgrounds” (“We are not about segregation at all”, TES, July 21) they should get it at home.

I would fund no more faith schools and make funding of existing ones conditional on their admitting whoever lives nearest regardless of religion. Their alternative would be to go private.

I’d also ban compulsory religion in all schools, state or private. As for assemblies, I suggest holding assembly before registration and making attendance voluntary. Form teachers could read out announcements when they called the register.
