AMBITIOUS competency targets in information technology are needed for school-leavers, a new government report says. Ninety per cent of school leavers should be accredited to NVQ level 1 (GCSE D-G equivalent) and 70 per cent to level 2 (A*-C equivalent) in IT skills by 2002, according to the “e-commerce@its.best.uk” report from the Department for Trade and Industry. A survey found that 40 per cent of businesses believed their staff had an inadequate understanding of IT.
