Lecturers complain about council seats

College lecturers have accused Estelle Morris of excluding them from the General Teaching Council while giving seats to their employers.

In a letter to the Education Secretary this week, Paul Mackney, general secretary of lecturers' union NATFHE, insists that the overlap between schools and colleges and the role of FE staff in teacher education make "a compelling case" for inclusion.

Earlier attempts to give FE a voice on the council resulted in places being allocated for the Association of Colleges and Sixth Form Colleges Employers Forum.

"We cannot recognise these organisations as representing the particular interests of teachers in colleges," he wrote, noting that school teachers were represented.
