Q: Many senior staff in my school think they should withdraw support from the weaker NQTs as it leads to "dependency" and will not benefit newcomers in the long run. It has been decided that "some" managers will not offer back-up if pupils misbehave. It will be up to the NQTs to deal with problems themselves and learn from mistakes. Some managers feel that too much of their time is wasted on people who are "not up to the job". These managers admit that the school has cut short many a career, but they also acknowledge that many who fail here go on to do well in other schools. My own head of department is of this persuasion, so I know I'll be on my own if problems arise. Any advice?
A: This is an outrage. Induction was brought in to ensure that NQTs were not left to sink or swim. Helping someone doesn't mean they will be dependent.
These senior staff are contravening their conditions of service, in which paragraph 62.11.1 says that teachers must contribute to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teaching and non-teaching staff, including induction and assessment of NQTs and those serving periods of induction. My advice? Raise hell!
