RAMADAN, 9 JULY - 7 AUGUST

1. The month of Ramadan

Introduce Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, and learn why it is observed in this engaging PowerPoint activity.

2. Hand decorations

Mehndi, the art of decorating hands and feet, is practised by Muslims during Eid ul-Fitr, the celebration at the end of Ramadan. In this activity, students create their own hand designs.

3. Make your own mosque

What is inside a mosque? Students find out about the Islamic place of worship and use a how-to guide to make their own.

4. Eid ul-Fitr

Experience Eid ul-Fitr and the breaking of the fast from a young person’s perspective in this audio lesson.

What is it like to be hungry? Develop your students’ empathy in a lesson on the spiritual reasons why Muslims fast during Ramadan, and what can be learned from them.

6. Calendar counting

Improve students’ counting skills with a Ramadan calendar activity and introduce them to the call to prayer, the Koran, fanoos lanterns and Ramadan foods.

7. Urdu and English jigsaw

Bring two languages together and get your students learning Urdu or teaching it to others, with a jigsaw puzzle that matches English and Urdu words.

8. Islam for children

Using a series of engaging worksheets, students discover the Five Pillars of Islam, take a metaphorical journey to Mecca and find out how Muslims help the poor during Ramadan.

How does fasting affect Muslims’ everyday lives? How do Muslims feel about Ramadan? Find out with this video and lesson plan.

10. Celebrating Eid ul-Fitr

What makes Ramadan special? How is it similar to and different from other religious events? Get into the spirit of Eid ul-Fitr with a short film on how people celebrate at the end of Ramadan and why.

THE BIG BUTTERFLY COUNT, 20 JULY - 11 AUGUST

1. Picture perfect

Try this sequencing exercise to introduce children to each stage of a butterfly’s life.

2. Life cycle of a butterfly

Why does a caterpillar eat its own skin? How does it become a butterfly? Use this PowerPoint to encourage students to think about the wonders of nature.

3. Fun and games

Learn through play with these cocoon-matching puzzles and caterpillar-feeding games.

4. Butterfly matching
