MARILYN Mason’s letter (TES, December 29) appealing for increased Church schooling to be matched by secular provision is welcome. It invites greater honesty about the essentially “religious” nature of schooling. Her complaint that humanist parents pay for Church schools through taxes is significant.
There should be schools where the curriculum assumes that there is no God, or if there is one, He is irrelevant. Its perspective is hat Jesus of Nazareth was crucified as a result of the normal workings of human nature and politics.
Christians already pay, through taxes, for thousands of schools like that. If they were available as a specific choice, like denominational schools, it would be interesting to see how many parents chose them.
