An alternative to coursework must be found to allow history students to explore the subject away from the classroom, according to a lecturer in the subject.

David Wright from the University of East Anglia, said an “uncheatable”

activity must be found that can be called something other than coursework.

He said: “History is everywhere, including where you live. It is important for pupils to be given the chance to apply the history they’ve studied at school to their local area, so there needs to be an alternative.”

Mr Wright proposed calling it “local, personal investigation”, which enables teenagers to find history for themselves.
