“TEN Years of Turmoil” (TES, November 26) summed up the educational upheavals admirably. However, children of five years are NOT tested upon entering school - they are assessed. The diagnostic assessing is carried out mainly for the benefit of reception teachers in order that they can identify the strengths and weaknesses of the children, with an eye to the National Curriculum requirements for their next year.
