Letters extra: don’t knock supply agencies

https://www.tes.com/magazine/archive/letters-extra-dont-knock-supply-agencies

I am writing in response to Nic Barnard’s article “Supply agencies under fire” ( TES April 13). In this, the ATL accused agencies of exploiting supply teachers, criticising pay and conditions and the lack of contributions towards their pension. The ATL also commented that supply agencies should be properly regulated.

Our agency would welcome proper regulation and we object to the ATL tarring every agency with the same brush. There are companies committed to giving the teacher and schools a fair deal and we are one of them.

Primary Supply is a Midlands-based company with two sister companies, Secondary Supply and Special Needs Supply. We pay our staff to scale starting at a minimum of spine point 5 (pound;101.66) and rising to a spine point 9 (pound;127.40). We offer a stakeholder pension to all our staff and have tried to negotiate paying into the teacher’s pension but without success. We are committed to continuous training for the development of the teacher and to ensure quality teaching for schools. We also find schools for NQTs willing to supervise their induction year.
