Letters Extra: Funding problem is about more than redundancies

There is a danger that the size of the funding problem in our schools is being judged almost solely on the basis of the number of teachers being made redundant.

I chair the Governing body of a large comprehensive school which decided - in common with many more up and down the country - to fight tooth and nail against the idea that we should make staff redundant in order to balance a stand-still budget. In the space of one year, we have been forced into setting a budget projected to overspend by more then pound;170,000.

Clearly, the government has got its sums wrong and it is time that the Education Secretary admitted as much. This problem will not go away and, if not tackled head on, will have a devastating effect on the educational achievement of our young people. Sandra Newens Harlow Essex
