Key stage 3 is the next target for the literacy strategy. What good news!

The literacy initiatives are not “sterile and vacuous” (Letters, TES, February 2). After researching techniques and attending training courses I have no doubts about them at key stage 3.

It is not a question of dictating a literacy hour in secondaries; that would be too rigid. Instead subject departments need to implement whole-school policies that can enliven lessons and allow children to realise their own potential.

We must not be negative. This will make teachers’ lives easier as children become more proficient.
