The television programme Excluded (BBC 2, March 22) was described by one reviewer as “the most desperate programme for months”. It showed staff in a secondary pupil referral unit patiently trying to help youngsters who turn the classroom into a circle of hell.

Nurture groups have been dealing with children like this for the past 30 years, with some 80 per cent being able to return to their mainstream class.

They are well-liked by parents who, like those on the programme, have often done their best but are defeated and despairing.
