Letters extra: Status that counts

So teachers are upset about the apparent downgrading of their professional status! I think it is sad that people measure themselves against what some learned body states is the benchmark. I find the professional respect I receive is more important when it comes from those I work with - children, their parents and other professionals.

It is about time that teachers and other professionals who complain about their fall in status realised that Thatcher’s “me” society has had a lasting legacy. In the 21st century no one can expect respect simply because of their position. Maybe it would be better if we valued more the respect we received from those around us rather than the media.

After all, when journalists are at the bottom of the ladder for respect they are bound to kick anyone who is afforded greater respect than themselves.
