Letters Extra: A teacher’s lot

I was interested to read Rivona Essop’s letter. In my view, teaching is the best possible job and I would be sorry to leave the profession so I would agree that there is much to be glad about in a teacher’s working life. However, my day does not last from 9am to 3.30pm, it lasts from 8.30am to 6pm and I teach on Saturday morning until noon.

I know this is a little unusual but I believe that a great many teachers do not leave the school premises the moment the school bell rings. I do have the long school holidays away from the classroom but I use part of that time to prepare for the next term and most of the people I have worked with in a number of schools do the same.

It is not helpful to perpetuate the myth that teachers work short hours and have long holidays and I am surprised that any teacher would do so.
