Hundreds of sixth-formers who received their A-level results almost two months late were astonished to be told that their papers had been hijacked by a postman with a grudge against an examiner, writes Warwick Mansell.

The OCR examination board gave the excuse after teenagers from 20 schools sitting a double module in economics were marked as absent when they received their results in August.

Further inquiries revealed the examiner was to blame, having gone on holiday without sending off the scripts. The students finally received their correct results earlier this month.
