Corner-shop staff are being encouraged to take A-level standard qualifications in persuading punters to buy more tickets and scratch cards.
Camelot, the National Lottery operator, has developed two courses in lottery retail skills with the exam board NCFE. Both courses are eligible for government funding.
Newsagent and convenience store staff will be able to choose between a level 2 qualification, equivalent to GCSE, or level 3 retail management qualification, equivalent to A-level.
They will gain “enhanced product understanding” of the main Lotto draw, Thunderball, Euromillions and dozens of scratch card games.
The course, which costs pound;43, also promises to teach “enhanced selling techniques” as well as general skills of communication, decision-making, customer care and teamwork.
Performance is evaluated through in-store assessments.
