More than half of A-level students in full-time education work part-time. Lifelong learning minister Malcolm Wicks said that 53 per cent of 16 to 18-year-old students work an average of 10 hours each week.

However, Mr Wicks said that an evaluation of the first year of educationa maintenance allowance pilots (where young people receive a grant to continue in full-time education) suggested that Year 11 students with jobs achieved better exam results than those who did not. Mr Wicks was responding to a question from Conservative MP Patrick Nicholls.
