Levels of literacy

Nominal scientific literacy

Has a token understanding of basic scientific concepts.

Can use basic scientific vocabulary.

Appreciates that technology is the application of science.

Functional scientific literacy

Can read and write passages using simple and appropriate scientific and technical vocabulary.

Has some engagement with and interest in science.

Is able to respond positively to questions about science.

Conceptual scientific literacy

Can understand parts of key scientific disciplines and their relationship to science.

Understands how explanations are developed via the process of science.

Multidimensional scientific literacy

Can understand the conceptual structures of science and technology.

Is aware of the history and philosophy of science.

Understands the relationships between science, technology and society.
