Lib Dems' new education recruit

FORMER teacher and Southport MP John Pugh has been appointed junior education spokesman for the Liberal Democrats. The 54-year-old was elected as Southport's MP in 2001 with a majority of 3,007. During the 1980s, he was a councillor on Sefton Borough Council, taking over as its leader in 1987. Mr Pugh was head of philosophy at Merchant Taylor's boys' school in Crosby, near Liverpool, from 1983 until he was elected to Parliament. His responsibilities are yet to be decided.
