Book-borrowing remains the main reason for public-library visits by young people, despite attempts to make them relevant in the digital age.

Scotland’s Schools Omnibus, an annual survey of secondary schools, found that 67 per cent of young people visited their local library to borrow, return or renew books. This was significantly higher than the numbers using computers and the internet (37 per cent) or borrowing multimedia materials (10 per cent).

The survey was commissioned by the Scottish Government and carried out by pollsters Ipsos MORI.
