Literacy - Search on for young authors

A writing competition for eight to 10-year-olds, which sees winners become published authors and schools receive pound;250 worth of free books, is open for entries.

Hopefuls must submit their poem or story of between 90 and 170 words to the Collins Big Cat Children's Writing Competition by February next year to have a chance of winning the top prize.

This year, nine-year-old Katie McDougall, from Hunter Primary in East Kilbride, was one of two UK winners, with her entry Milo's Moustache; it is now available to buy through Collins Big Cat, a guided reading series for three to 11-year-olds.

Milo the dog is very proud of his moustache but one day a bird comes and steals it from him. The reader joins Milo as he searches for his missing moustache and finally solves the problem.

According to Big Cat, the story is "hilarious and quirky".
