Talking in class helps pupils learn and should be encouraged, according to a researcher.

Eileen Connell, from the Institute of Education at London university, called for a greater emphasis on “the social aspects of learning” and “more time for conversation”.

The focus on tests and targets in the Government’s strategy for 11 to 14-year-olds left many feeling isolated and alienated, she said.
