The scheme was set up after teaching unions in the region called for workshops to provide extra coaching after a spate of incidents in which teachers’ home movies - some of them explicit - led to them being subjected to abuse.

The latest incident involves a retired teacher who became a YouTube star when a pupil secretly filmed him pretending to be a chicken. It is understood that Merseyside NUT has now compiled a dossier, which includes a teacher’s home-made sex tape being placed on a social networking site in an act of “vengeance”.

Another teacher mislaid a memory stick in school containing a number of X- rated pictures of them. Fortunately, it was found by a colleague rather than a pupil.

Merseyside NUT executive member Julie Lyon-Taylor said: “This is about educating young teachers as we want to avoid these incidents, which could affect their professional standing or put them in a vulnerable position.”

Ian Andain, chairman of Liverpool Schools Forum and headteacher of Broadgreen International School, said he welcomed the scheme.

“Posting your profile on things like Facebook is so risky for teachers as it is a huge manifestation of your private life,” he said.
