London trainees need more cash

WE welcome the introduction of teacher training salaries. We are the largest secondary teacher training provider in London and 90 per cent of our trainees go on to teach in London schools.

Given the very serious shortage of teachers in London, we had hoped that this initiative would be sufficient incentive to stem our downward trend in recruitment and fill all our places.

Sadly, despite 11,000 enquiries, ths has not proved to be the case. Time and again, potential applicants told us that pound;6,000 does not go very far in London. We believe that the London factor needs to be urgently addressed and an additional training allowance provided for those wanting to train and teach in London.
