Devon’s fire and rescue service has banned children from climbing on fire engines during community visits in case the pound;250,000 appliances are damaged, and to protect firefighters from false allegations.

The fire service changed its policy after discovering it was one of the few in the country which still let members of the public on to the emergency vehicles during school visits or fundraising events.

“It’s the environment we live in,” said Trevor French, the secretary of the Devon Fire Brigades Union.
