Lost in the heat of the moment

For a nation obsessed with weather, we are awful at it. The South-east gets a drought order and monsoon, simultaneously. Trains pout at “the wrong sort of snow”. The heatwave should have been a lovely pre-holiday boost. But schools became so hot that staff drilled holes in the walls for DIY aircon.

Outdoor lessons would not help. Teachers are being advised not to slap sun cream on pupils for fear of being accused of sexual abuse. Fine, perhaps, apart from schools which ban kids bringing suncream, and infants too young to apply their own.

So, do we prefer children baked or roasted? Or should we think more sensibly about our long hot summer?
