Urgent action is needed to reduce the number of Traveller children who do not attend school, an Office for Standards in Education report said this week.

An Ofsted survey of 11 education authorities found that up to 12,000 secondary-age Traveller children are not registered at school, an increase from about 10,000 in 1996. Some councils were praised for their support services, but in too many these efforts were undermined by the way they dealt with unauthorised Traveller camps.
