I am in my sixth year of primary teaching in Years 1 to 3. I am thinking of changing to secondary. I’d love to teach English language and literature. I did a four-year BEd degree and specialised in history and English. Would I have to do an MA in English to teach to secondary level?

Your QTS is enough to allow you to transfer. What timetable would you like; and does your BEd contains sufficient subject knowledge to stretch able pupils? The QTS standards emphasise development of subject knowledge, so an MA might be a good idea. Without it, you might find yourself with a restricted timetable and employed because you were good with younger pupils. Talk to an English adviser or head of department in a secondary school for their perspective.
