I was surprised to read that thereason given for the rise in union membership was the stress of school inspections (TES, August 1).
Surely a more logical one (and the one given to me by experienced teachers when finally joining a union) is the threat of action from parents in any area of our job - poor exam results, negligence, alleged abuse, special needs not meeting parents’ wishes and so on.
The teaching profession is no more immune than any other in our increasing litigious society.
