Following on from a pilot project funded by the National Lottery and the Goethe Institute, which featured Brecht’s Mother Courage and The Lover’s Lament, the Lyceum will include two other productions this time around, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge, and already there has been a lot of interest.

Education officers Steve Small and Colin Brady start the education programme with a practical two-hour workshop at a school. A scene from the play that pupils will see at the Lyceum forms the basis of a discussion of the play’s themes and ideas.

“We like to build a relationship with the pupils before they see the play,” says Mr Small.

The education team’s preparations help the pupils to understand and enjoy the theatre experience along with more seasoned theatre-goers.

The third stage of the programme involves a visit to the school by members of the cast, who present a post-production workshop to consider issues raised by the production.
