Macho men's time is past

Jeremy Sutcliffe only scratches the surface when he refers to the macho language that dominates the education debate (TES, January 17).

Language is the least of the problems a mainly female teaching profession finds with many male leaders. Their management is macho: linear, monotasking, forceful, aggressive. Change means upheaval, distress even. It is rarely successful.

Teamwork - often women's strength - is seen as too cosy a way of being effective. Not trying to be superwoman, relying on the judgment of colleagues - heaven forbid. Amazing how it seems to work !
