Jeremy Sutcliffe only scratches the surface when he refers to the macho language that dominates the education debate (TES, January 17).

Language is the least of the problems a mainly female teaching profession finds with many male leaders. Their management is macho: linear, monotasking, forceful, aggressive. Change means upheaval, distress even. It is rarely successful.

Teamwork - often women’s strength - is seen as too cosy a way of being effective. Not trying to be superwoman, relying on the judgment of colleagues - heaven forbid. Amazing how it seems to work !
