Classrooms can be places of magical revelation with pupils transported to new levels of understanding and teachers gaining the kind of satisfaction few careers afford.These mini-epiphanies are aired on ‘Chalkface Lovesongs’, a Radio 4 series now entering its fourth year, which invites teachers to write about an episode that sums up the unique rewards of a profession so often underpaid and undervalued. Producer Beatrice Rubens came up with the idea for the series after hearing teacher friends recount moving tales of their daily lives. ‘There is a great deal of ignorance about what goes on in schools, the challenges teachers face and the fantastic work they do,’ she says. Each 15-minute programme in the four-part series features two teachers reading their stories. Some describe a single lesson while others span the slow dawning of understanding
