Citizenship takes on a tangible and purposeful existence on October 25 when Community Service Volunteers persuade 75,000 people to take part in Make a Difference Day. This is the biggest day of volunteering in the UK, and many one-off projects go on to establish permanent roots. Several organisations are making citizenship packs available for teachers containing videos, posters, role-plays and other encouragements to adventurous thought. Among them are Action for Blind People, Amnesty, British Red Cross, Christian Aid and Fairtrade Foundation. Projects range from visiting old people to recording bird migration. Children who produce a piece of art on the theme of Our Relationship With Water may see it displayed in an exhibition at Tate Modern. Registration and further information packs are at www.csv.org.uk
